Black Cohosh, also called Snakeroot, Bugbane, Fairy Candles and Rattletop, is a flowering perennial herb in the Ranunculae family. It is native to the woodlands of eastern North America where it has been used as medicine by indigenous groups such as the Cherokee, the Iroquois, and the Algonquian.
The dried root is traditionally used to support gynecological health, especially during perimenopausal and menopausal years. Indigenous peoples also used the root to treat depression, inflammation, and to support bronchial health.
It is considered an emmenagogue, antispasmodic, alterative and sedative.*
